Hoss Ponderosa Shorts

Hoss Technical Gear Ponderosa baggy shorts with integral liner

I have long had two complaints with baggy shorts: They get snagged on the saddle when moving on and off of it, and the edge of the baggy part chafes the top of my thigh. Finally, I've found a pair of baggies that eliminates both of these problems.

The Ponderosa handles the first complaint by tailoring the outer shell crotch close to the chamois liner. The shorts also have a nice webbing belt with a big, plastic clip connection to keep them from falling down even with overloaded pockets.

In most other baggies, the liner is only connected to the outer shell at the waist. While the liner may provide a nice chamois, the legs of the non-stretch, baggy shorts extend beyond the liner and rub the tops of the thighs with each up-and-down movement of the legs. Not so with the Ponderosa, in which the liner is connected to the baggy shell at both the waist and at the bottom edge, and the seam at the bottom is a thin, soft mesh fabric. The folds of the soft mesh glide across the thighs as the legs move up and down, completely eliminating chafing.

The Ponderosa costs $45 and comes in four sizes and four colors. It has an eight-panel microfiber polyester shell, a six-panel polyester/Spandex liner with a CoolMax chamois, and seven pockets, two with zippers and three with Velcro cover flaps.
